Safeguarding Policy for Participants


The London Arts-Based Research Centre (LABRC) is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for everyone who takes part in our events, whether in person or online.

Safeguarding means taking steps to protect participants from harm, harassment, exploitation, or abuse, and ensuring that everyone can take part with confidence.


Scope

This policy applies to all participants, speakers, volunteers, and staff at LABRC events. It covers conduct during sessions, in social settings linked to events, and in any related online spaces.


Our Commitments

  • We are committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and harassment-free environment at our events.
  • We will take all safeguarding concerns seriously, and respond promptly, appropriately, and with care and confidentiality.
  • We will act proportionately to protect the safety and dignity of participants, and take reasonable steps to prevent harm wherever possible.

Expected Behaviour

  • Treat all participants with respect and courtesy.
  • Respect personal and professional boundaries.
  • Do not engage in harassment, bullying, intimidation, or exploitation of any kind.
  • Be mindful of language, cultural differences, and power dynamics.

Reporting Concerns

If you feel unsafe, or if you witness behaviour that may put others at risk:

  • Please email info@labrc.co.uk with the subject line “Safeguarding.”
  • If you need immediate assistance during an event, please speak to a member of the organising team, who will help you .
  • All concerns will be taken seriously and handled sensitively.

How We Respond

  • We will listen carefully, take concerns seriously, and prioritise safety.
  • Immediate steps may include offering a safe space, supporting the participant, or asking someone to leave the event.
  • Where appropriate, we may refer concerns to external authorities (e.g. venue security, local services, or the police).
  • No one will face retaliation for raising a concern in good faith.

Support Available

  • A quiet or safe space can be provided during events.
  • A trusted person can accompany you if you need support.
  • We can share information about external support services where relevant.

Confidentiality and Records

  • Safeguarding reports will be logged and stored securely.
  • Information will only be shared with those who need to know in order to act.
  • Participants may request access to records relating to them.

Review

This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as needed to reflect best practice.
