Established by LABRC in 2024, the Patricia Leavy Award for Arts-Based Research is presented annually to researchers and artists whose work demonstrates exceptional creativity, methodological depth, and a profound capacity to communicate complex human and social questions through artistic expression. Whether through narrative inquiry, fiction-based research, poetry, music, visual art, or movement, this award celebrates the transformative potential of arts-based research to reach beyond the academy and into the world.
About Dr. Patricia Leavy
Dr. Patricia Leavy is a world-renowned sociologist, bestselling author, and pioneer who has dedicated her career to advancing arts-based research. In her own words, arts-based research “exists at the nexus of art/the humanities and research, or art/the humanities and science.” Her extensive body of work — including the landmark text Method Meets Art and the Handbook of Arts-Based Research — has provided scholars worldwide with the practical and theoretical frameworks needed to merge creative practice with rigorous academic inquiry. She is widely considered the world’s most visible proponent of arts-based research as a means of making research publicly accessible.
