Turning Family Stories into Poetry
By: Sandra Faulkner
Location: Books on the Rise–80 Hill Rise, Richmond, London
(online participation also available)
Do you have some family stories you have always wanted to concretize in verse and image? In this workshop, Faulkner will guide participants through the process of turning family stories into poems and collage. Faulkner will discuss how poetry is a way to re-story and show tensions in family life and discuss three techniques she used in her collection of family stories in verse, Knit Four, Frog One (Sense/Brill, 2014) and her chapbook, Buttered Nostalgia (JSPR, 2021). Participants will get practice with dialogue poems, poetic transcription, and collage poetry using family artifacts (e.g., photos, recipes, records).
Before the workshop, it would be helpful to have a family story or two written down and some photographs and/or other family artifacts to use in collage poems.
